Today, in honor of World Refugee Day, I invite you to be a part of our refugee neighbors’ journey through Re:new!
As I reflect this year on the meaning of World Refugee Day, I can’t help but continually fall back on the refugee stories throughout the Bible. These stories are peppered throughout scripture, but one in particular that comes to mind is the story of Jesus. When I think of life on earth for Jesus, I think of His ministry as an adult, but he was also a refugee. As a young child, Jesus and his family fled their home country to avoid persecution and violence. What a journey this must have been! No communication system, no modern travel, no medical care along the way, no warm bed waiting on the other side. Yet we know that God the Father protected this family the entire way, leading into the most important story ever told.
For 26 million people around the world at this exact moment, this journey is very much a reality. Millions of refugees are fleeing their home to a foreign nation, often in dangerous conditions without means of communication, not knowing what lies on the other side of their trek. Jesus understands this journey because He lived it. For the refugee who is across borders, we are called to pray and support those serving them. For the refugee who is our neighbor, we are called to walk beside them and be their friend. That is what we aim to do here at Re:new! When a student joins our free class, they are welcomed by a community that is eager to show them that they are each fearfully and wonderfully made. When an Artisan joins our team, they are given an opportunity to work in a safe environment to provide for their families as they learn American workplace culture.
